Shadow Self marked the beginning of my exploration into Carl Jung’s theories on the “shadow self.”
The piece features a literal shadow, permanently cast as a silhouette, reflecting Jung’s idea that:
“Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. If an inferiority is conscious, one always has a chance to correct it.” – Carl Jung
Originally sculpted in plaster in 2023, the shape was taken directly from the shadow of my own body.
This was translated into an 8-foot plaster cast, which I then carved, sanded, and polished by hand.
